Artist's Comments

This was my entry for a recent fanart contest run by

The subject was "the Scooby gang drawn in as members of a popular television show"

The TV show in question should be pretty obvious, but it's Doctor Who for those of you who have missed seeing TV for the last 40 years!

I concluded that Shaggy was weird enough to be cast as the Doctor. I've given him Christopher Eccleston's leather jacket and black t-shirt (from the 2005 season) in case the costume looks un-who-ish.

I originally tried to put Velma in the denim jacket and mini-skirt that Billie Piper wears as Rose Tyler in several episodes of the 2005 season, but it just didn't work. I eventually realised that what I needed to do was to have Velma as the Doctor's companion, not Velma playing the part of someone else, hence the canonical costume.

The Tardis is traced from a picture in the Christmas issue of the Radio Times (BBC listings magazine). That had David Tennant (the 2006 season Doctor) and Billie Piper in a different pose in the door of the Tardis.

The pose for Shaggy and Velma is loosely based on a photo on the BBC website showing Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper in a similar composition (but only shows them from the waist up). Shaggy looks a lot more scared than Mr Eccleston!

The drawing was prepared as three separate layers, all hand drawn in pencil and then inked with technical pen, then scanned into Photoshop. I used a lightbox while I was sketching the characters, but having them in separate layers allowed micro-adjustment relative to each other.

Colouring and shading was all done in Photoshop.

The background was all done in Photoshop, starting with the noise filter, than applying some perspective and an assortment of other filters to achieve the result shown.

Original drawing size about 6x8".

Again, this is a wonderful display of your talents. As well done as the drawings of the two Scooby characters and the booth itself, I love the location of the piece. You even thought to have the shadow and the lighted surface fade into the darkness, as if preparing to spin a good Sci Fi yarn.

PS: Hope I didn't offend you with my lack of knowledge about the subject matter! Who fans abhor me for this!

I've never seen Doctor Who, but I think the new clothes fit Shaggy's look perfectly. Not his personality, actually, but his look! :-P

Funny how things come together.

Nice job on the pic!

I have a RL friend who loves both Doctor Who and Shaggy. She is not on DA. I'm sending this to her. She'd love this!

Thanks!

I was surprised how few people are both Scooby and Doctor Who fans. I guess because I'm both, I assumed lots of other people were too.
