Artist's Comments

One of a several drawings done for Jaguaro's Scooby Doo/Indiana Jones crossover fanfic Raiders of the Lost Bark.

Indiana and Henry Jones and Velma open the tomb of General Publius's wife.

This is the second of the two costume variants, which is just Velma in her usual gear in case Jaguaro decided not to go with the other look.

The background and skeleton are from material found on clipart.com. All heavily photoshopped to make them look more painting like.

Adobe Photoshop CS. Reduced from riginal size 1600x1200

This is absolutely cool.! It really looks like it came from a single picture and looks like it is straight out of a movie. You are truly telented at doing these photo manipulations. Even Velma, Indy and Henry, although drawn in your style, look like they are straight out of a screen shot. If I didn't know any better, I would say this was a screen shot.

Thank you!

Velma was easy. I've drawn her so many times now, that the only hard bit was getting her expression right to fit the mood of the picture.

The Joneses were far harder. I used reference photos for both of them (several in both cases) but the hard bit was getting a recognisable likeness (Henry is better than Indy) and the expressions I wanted while using a line drawing style that I wouldn't instinctively use on a picture of a real person. I still think I used too many lines to make the faces, but it was as few as I could personally get away with and still get the picture to work.

The lighting really brought the picture together and transformed the image from 3 pictures of people to 1 picture of 3 people.

One bit of the picture I didn't cite a source for was the back edge of the sarcophagus. It started out as a photo of a 6-inch long section of a wall in my garden post-processed to fit in with the manipulations I had applied to the background and the skeleton. In retrospect, the lip should have shown a bit more wear and damage.

Most comments so far have been on the alternatively-costumed Velma. What's your vote on Velma's beret, Cathy?

I love showing this to my daughter, then popping in the second one so that it appears a beret and scarf magically appear. Though I prefer the other, I clearly like this one. I still can't get over how life-like you made the Joneses (as well as how natural and realistic Velma appears). I need to show you the Indiana Jones comics that I rely upon for looks so you can see just how amazing your work is -- they don't look anything like movie characters (except for the really expensive conceptual art). You have to be one of the most underrated artists around. In fact, the quality is so good that I should stick to writing stories and let you do the drawing and coloring if we want to get this out somewhere. But I appreciate you working with on improving my drawing style and coloring. Very Mahayanisitic of you.
